A native of Burlington, Vermont, Dr. Joel P. Sussman obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy from the University of Vermont in 1966. He went on to receive his M.D. at the University of Vermont in 1970.
Dr. Sussman has been working in the field of school dysfunction since his fellowship in Developmental and Learning Disabilities at the University of Florida in 1974.
After completing his pediatric residency at the Schneider Children’s Hospital at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, he was Chief of Pediatrics at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida.
Dr. Sussman has lectured widely around the state of South Carolina and nationally, speaking to school faculties, parent groups, college classes, psychologists, social workers and service clubs.
He is a reviewer for Pediatrics, the major journal for the American Academy of Pediatrics and currently serves as a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Carolina, College of Medicine.
Dr. Sussman began his pediatric practice in Columbia, South Carolina in 1975 and was founder of Palmetto Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic in 1978. He retired from the practice in 1993 to devote his career to Palmetto Associates for Scholastic Success.
Dr. Sussman spent 20 years as a pediatrician not only treating children but learning about their mothers, and their concerns, along the way. In 1992, he decided to limit his practice to his sub-specialty of school and behavioral problems. In a short time, more and more of the parents of the children whom he was treating asked for help for similar problems.
The practice has evolved to the point where now 1/3 of the patients are adults. In treating these adults, it became apparent that the adult females had different problems than their male counterparts. Dr. Sussman has taken a special interest in these female patients and their unique problems. It has now become one of the major concentrations in his practice.
