Palmetto Associates is a multi-modal evaluation clinic for children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorders. It was established in 1992 by Dr. Joel Sussman.

The clinic is devoted to working with both children and adults.

Our work with children

Children have their own unique set of problems and the clinic evaluates and treats children with ADD, Specific Learning Disabilities, subtle seizure disorders, medical syndromes, and behavioural problems.

The unifying aspect of their problems is a difficulty in achieving success in school. The evaluation is comprehensive in nature.

Developmental, medical, educational, psychological and family histories are investigated in depth. The most expert evaluators available in South Carolina are used. These include special educators, language specialists, central auditory processing experts, and perceptual motor specialists.

The type of testing recommended is dependent on each child’s individual problems and needs. The evaluation includes a full neurological exam and computer testing to help with the assessment.

The family is given a summation and a diagnosis, and therapeutic plans are suggested. Recommendations to the parents, the school, and most importantly to the child, will be made. After-school tutorials with special educators and psychological therapy with a clinical psychologist are offered for those families which desire these services.

Our work with adults

Since the late 1980’s, it has been recognized that ADD does not necessarily disappear at the onset of adulthood. Seeing the need for evaluating and treating adults with ADD and related disorders, Dr. Sussman has helped adults since the inception of the clinic

Approximately 1/3 of our patents are adults coming to us from every corner of South Carolina. Men and women from all walks of life, college and graduate students, medical and law students, all have benefited from evaluation and treatment programs

Most recently women have recently been shown to have their own unique set of problems with previously undiagnosed ADD. Managing their careers and their families puts significant stress on any woman. Trying to deal with multiple issues is especially stressful for women with ADD. Dr Sussman has a particular interest in investigating and treating these problems.
